Which American football position suits you? A beginner's guide

American football is a sport where strong, heavy, fast and skilful players are all needed. Each position asks for something different, which is why practically anyone can find their place at Nordians Teplice. Here is a quick overview to help you find your way.

Offence: get the ball into the end zone

  • Quarterback (QB): the playmaker who runs the offence and throws passes. Suits players with vision, a calm head and an accurate arm.
  • Running back (RB): carries the ball and fights through the defence. Needs explosiveness and isn’t afraid of contact.
  • Wide receiver (WR): catches passes and outruns defenders. A position for fast players with good hands.
  • Tight end (TE): half blocker, half receiver. Ideal for bigger players who can still move well.
  • Offensive line (OL): protects the quarterback and opens holes for the runners. Strength and weight count here, the more the better.

Defence: stop the opponent

  • Defensive line (DL): pressures the quarterback and stops runs right at the start. Again a position for strong, heavier players.
  • Linebacker (LB): the heart of the defence. Reads the play, reacts to runs and passes, and makes a lot of tackles.
  • Defensive back (DB): cornerbacks and safeties cover the receivers and guard against long passes. They need speed and quick reactions.

Special teams: kicks and returns

The kicker and punter take care of the kicks. Ever played football (soccer)? This is where your kicking technique comes in handy. Players from offence and defence also join in on special teams.
